Hot! The “Fun and Flowy” Dress

This is by far my favorite pattern at the moment. Favorite pattern of the year….not so much. This is more playing with the dresstangle and high-low effect I love. I was going to go full on muumuu but my mother-in-law convinced me to give it some shape. I took about 3 1/2 yds of fabric and cut it in half. I marked an arm opening then went in about 3 inches to create a small sleeve then tapered back out to the edge of the fabric. I marked the center on both the front and back pieces and also made a mark about 1/4 of the way out from the center then folded the fabric in on the right and left. I did the same for the back.

I pinned it then stitched them down at the top. Then I sewed both pieces together and finished the neck and sleeve openings. I left an opening on both sides to slip the belt through.

I was pretty happy with it as a floor length dress but I wanted to wear it to work. I didn’t think I’d get away with wearing a long dress that’s mostly purple and not black. I decided to fold the front piece up and sew it from one side to the other. Now that was more like it! I figured I’d wear it with a cropped black jacket but ended up wearing it as is. I got tons of compliments and no one in management said a thing.

Here’s a couple more pictures-

I love the way the dress moves when I walk. It reminds me a little of this dress-

from the Art Challenge. Only a little. After a year of sewing I think I could make it a lot better though I think it still looks pretty nice.

All right ladies-this is it! Our year in sewing is almost over! Phew!

  1. Oooh…that is so fabulous! Of all the fantastic things you have made this year, this is hands-down my favourite! The side view with the back pleat…it’s just like a modern robe a la francaise. Swoon…. (runs off to rummage through stash to see if I have any suitable fabric for making one for me).

  2. Yes yes yes one for me too please.
Management wouldn’t dare say a thing about such a beauty.

  3. Lovely! The purple and black look stunning on you. I agree with your mother-in-law, the belt really gives it shape and makes you look fabulous. Have a wonderful holiday with your family and friends.

  4. This is INDEED fun and flowy! You’ve taken the high/low hem and brought it to new “heights” so to speak : ) And I agree with Vicki, how could management say anything about it? There’s black in it…

  5. This is flipping fabulous. It’s yet another “wow I would never ever of thought of that” creation from you. You’ve such an amazing design brain…..and that styling – the knotted necklace, the belt and how you’ve tied it, those fabulous shoes…’s really lovely. I’m so glad you took part in Sew Weekly this year, you’ve given us so much variety and originality….and just genius. Thank you.

  6. WHOA. Can you make a tutorial? I have read and re-read your discription, but I’m still not sure which bit goes where! It’s just gorgeous! x Happy 2013 and Congratulations on a year of sewing!
