Challenge: MUSIC

I’m so excited to tell you about this incredible outfit! On Aug 12, My youngest daughter and I went to Outside Lands Music Festival in San Francisco, CA, which is posting day for the Sew Weekly, hence, my tardiness.  We found parking right away along side Golden Gate Park, packed up our bags, and headed into the park. Luckily for us, all of the musicians that we planned to see were all playing on the same stage. Of course our whole reason for going was to see the incredible Regina Spektor sing her songs and play the piano. You see, Leah and I have loved her for years and we decided a long time ago that where ever she planned to perform, we would even fly to see her live. Well, we didn’t have to fly, just drive three hours to the city to finally enjoy her live on stage. The lineup for the afternoon was FUN, Franz Ferdinand, Regina Spektor, Jack White, and then Stevie Wonder.

Favorite Regina Spektor Music Video

Let me tell you that the whole thing was quite an experience. I’ve been to concerts in the past, where you have assigned seats, but never anything like this. We were determined to get as close as we could to the stage. So holding hands, mother in tow, we squeezed forward inch by inch, bodies touching bodies, until we were as close and as tight as we could get. Mind over claustrophobia, and trying to not to be too concerned with comfort or safety, we enjoyed her set with tears in our eyes. We were there! We were with her! Regina, I made this lace top especially for you and proudly wore it in your honor. Every time I wear it, I will be reminded of this fabulous experience with my daughter. Years ago, Leah and I made a few music videos together, she would lip-sync the songs and I would film. Then we would spend days editing and perfecting them. We haven’t made such elaborate vids in a long time, but we did put together a tiny clip of us at the concert for you all. It’s at the end of the blog.

I came across a handful of Step by Step Sewing patterns the other week at the thrift and at 10 cents a piece, I knew I couldn’t go wrong. I made the straight skirt which was super easy. I made it extra wide so that I could take it in on the sides to fit exactly how I wanted. I believe these patterns come with additional instruction cards or something, because there were no instructions included. I really didn’t need them, however. I didn’t wear the skirt to the concert because, it would have been too hard to sit on the ground. Plus you never can count on warm weather in SF.

Seeing one of our favs: Regina Spektor!

As you can see, pants and sweaters were a must on Sunday. Towards the evening, after a full afternoon of music, we skipped out on Stevie Wonder, and headed for the car. Unfortunately, that great parking spot came along with a parking ticket for $80.00 bucks! It did seem too good to be true even though we parked there just like more than 40 other cars! Despite that,  I’m glad I was so up for it. I must be a superwoman, because everyone there was between 18 and 35! That’s one for the bucket list, I’d say. Short video starring Rengina Spektor, lace blouse, and thousands of fans!

Barbara is a resident of Northern California. She loves to sew and has pledged not to buy retail clothes for the year of 2012. That means she has to make her own, or buy it at a thrift store. I hope she doesn't spend too much on fabric. When she shops for fabric her eyes light up as she imagines the possibilities! She's like a kid in a candy store.

    • Thank you Shelley, I love this outfit too. The skirt is just the right amount of edgy and I think i’ll be able to wear it to work. I’m happy to see so many of you know who she is. I often mention her to others and they have no idea who she is.

  7. My daughter got me into Regina Spektor recently. We have cool kids! That lace top is so beautiful (and so on-trend!) and what a fabulous animal print fabric find from a thrift store. Superb outfit. And fab video, thanks for letting us be part of that experience.

    • Thank you Tempest. Sounds like our girls are similar in many ways. Mine just got her own apartment and I probably won’t see her very often. She’s a sweetheart, though. She always calls and let’s us know all about what she’s up too.

The animal print…wasn’t that a great find? It made such a great skirt. I love it.

    • He played right after Regina, so imagine all those kids pushing toward the front during her show so that they could be right up there. I had to squeeze my way out. It was just too much. I enjoyed his show from a comfortable distance. Leah stayed right up there though.

  11. Love that lace top.. So pretty.. sorry about the ticket..

  14. Thanks so much Kazz. It was really quite an experience and a good way to end the summer vacation. I’m seriously back at work now preparing for all those cute little sixth and seventh graders. I hope I can keep up with the challenges. The days don’t seem long enough for all I want to do.

  15. Hi BaRbar, great shirt and I watched the video you made the your daughter, so much fun!

  16. I watched 500 Days of Summer for the first time last week, and when the opening song started, I though “Who is that amazing voice?!” and fell immediately in love. The singer? Regina Specktor. How I’ve managed to miss her all these years is a mystery, but now I’m part of the fan club.
