So in case you didn’t know, my 2 year old is completely obsessed with The Little Mermaid. Since we watch the movie everyday, and listen to the soundtrack every little car ride, it’s no wonder I became inspired by the love my daughter has for the rebellious red head. I obviously chose the ocean as my subject for our outdoors challenge. I love the Pacific Ocean. I love everything about it. We have come to the beach often this Summer, so coming back to do a shoot wasn’t gonna be a problem for us.

Sadly the dress did not turn out how I expected and had a rough time with this particular pattern. Not only was I not ecstatic about finishing this dress, but I literally started it Sunday morning, ran out of thread, and had to use a light gray zipper due to poor judgement on my part. My husband almost talked me out of doing this weeks challenge because of how frustrated I was getting. But, I had a vision of what I wanted, and I was determined to finish and get somewhat close to what I wanted. As I was messing up through the sewing process, I tossed the pattern instructions aside and did it how I thought it should be done. Though I am not sure if I really like the dress, I know I could use it again for a costume or whatever. Maybe I’ll end up fixing what I dislike.

But, it’s kind of a good thing I didn’t entirely like my dress, because I didn’t feel bad about walking into the ocean with it. Especially since the hem isn’t done at all. The water wasn’t too cold. Some of the waves were strong and could have knocked me over if I had not braced myself for their arrival. The husband and I had a lot of fun doing this shoot together. It was a new experience for the both of us.

I loved giving a couture look this dress though. I put a ton of gold and blue eye make up all over my eyes, and stuck on pearl stickers above my eyebrows, and heavy on the gold sparkles!

And the Year of No Fear continues. I got right in the water and let it wash up on me, in a dress for that matter. I normally wouldn’t even do this in a swim suit. I’m so chicken when it comes to cold water. But a challenge is a challenge. And this challenge is completed.

  1. What am awesome photo shoot! Always love your photos

  2. Congratulations on pulling through! The pictures are amazing and if you had fun with your husband taking them and braved cold ocean waves in it this dress certainly has to have some magic sewn into it. ;)

  3. You know, for not liking this dress, you went to a lot of AWESOME trouble to look ravishing in it! :) Seriously… this photo shoot is beautiful!

  4. I think you and your husband have a future as photographer and model! Sometimes what we see in magazines is editorial but not really wearable. Bravo! You look good and I think I’m going to try and live with a little less fear myself. You’re a great inspiration. Thank you Bethany-

  5. Amazing photo shoot- thank you for going to all that trouble!

  6. OMG, Bethany! You think you might only wear this as a costume? It’ beautifully and the color really suits you. You should wear it in your everyday life. I just adore your photoshoot. You can see through the pictures how much fun you and husband had. The only thing missing is a close up of your face with all of that incredible attention to detail of your makeup. ;)

  7. Love it Bethany, way to push the challenge. I like the photos and what fun it is to work as a team. I love shooting with my husband but we can’t do it all the time because of his workload and own artistic projects. But the weeks I do get to work with him is great!

  8. This whole photo set is really, really, really pretty. Perhaps the end-function of this particular dress was this shoot, to remember time you both spent together and the challenges that went with it.
For $16, wow! Less than a family outing at an amusement park, and some seriously gorgeous photos.
I also think you’ve given a new, SW spin to “Trash the Dress” and may start a new trend.

  9. Wow! The photos must not capture whatever you dislike about the dress- it looks fantastic on you! And the photo shoot brings it all together in a beautiful way.

  10. You should have these pictures printed and framed. Lovely!

  11. That has to be the most original idea ever … I bet there’ll be an outbreak of ‘in the sea’ photos now … but you were the first! I agree with Anna – you should get these framed …

  15. The dress is such a beauty! The photos too. Maybe you could shorten the hem a little so that it doesn’t “sweep the floor”. I’m sure it will be a gorgeous maxi.

  16. Love the shape and the color! Beautiful all’round!

  17. Finally made it here phew! Bethany, these shots are fantastic queen of the ocean I say. Simply stunning, M.E must look at you in awe. Fab dress and colour. Beautiful lady.

    • Hahaha! Thank you Kazz! M.E. always says “pretty dress mommy” “M.E. have pretty dress too?” So now I have to make her a Cinderella dress, since that what she thinks it is. Silly little girly girl.

  18. Beautiful pictures. And the dress is wonderful. You look very pretty in this color.

  19. What a lot of fun! I know what you mean about struggling with something and not sure about it but this was well worth it. Sometimes its not so much about the destination but the journey. Good for you!!

  20. So very true Loran. Thank you so much!

  21. I think this dress is fantastic! I can’t see what you might find wrong with it (but, we’re always hardest on our creations, aren’t we?) I have this dress partially cut and now I really want to find time to finish it. Perfect photos as well!
