“Biking for Blackberries” outfit
Fabric: White w/ blue polka-dot Tee shirt knit and a vintage faux denim-look fabric (some kind of interlock blend)
Patterns: Easy Mccall’s 5857(2009) for the shorts and Butterick 4126 um… (1980’s I think) for the blouse
Notions: zipper, Dollar Tree jean buttons (meant for the expanding or shrinking waistline) They will work in a pinch until I’m near a fabric store.
Time to complete: A couple of days before my trip to Solvang, CA. Didn’t want to come back with sewing hanging over my head.
First worn: July 14 for a bike ride and photo op.
Wear again? Oh yes!
Total price: Everything was either gifted or thrifted. So only a dollar for six jean buttons of which I only used one. So, I felt fine about spending some money on a little fabric while on my trip. And it was…fascinating, fun, and frankly, unbelievable. Well, more about that next week!
I think the blouse is rather clever. I’ve been wanting to make it for about a month, but I wanted to try it out in a muslin before I cut into more costly fabric. I like how it cris-crosses in front and the long ties wrap around the waist and tie in the front. One tie slips through a slit on the opposite side seam and then they both meet together in the front. I think the ties are too wide and could easily be sewn right sides together as far as would allow and then you wouldn’t see the back side of the fabric or the seams. Next time I plan to do just that. Everyone in my family thinks its very cute and so do I.
The shorts were fun to make. I took a chance on them fitting correctly through the crotch, and just added a little to the side seams since the pattern is a size 12, and I usually wear a 14. I love the faux fly, unlike jeans with all the little pieces, this was super easy. There are two darts in the back and a waistband that sits at the waist, the side pockets are lined with floral scraps, and the top stitching is a baby blue color. I added the pockets from another pattern and decorated them with one of those fancy stitches (that I rarely if ever use) that come with my machine.
I’m so lucky! I’m surrounded with the great outdoors. After visiting southern California twice this month, I’m very appreciative of the lovely valley in which we live. We can walk for at least a mile without seeing cars or people. Bike riding is awesome! I love taking my little basket down the road to hunt for blackberries every summer. They are so delicious in pie and ice cream!
