Hot! The “Smash” Dress

I was kind of so totally cool in high school that I blasted show tunes in my room.  Good thing I was in the band so that was considered reasonable.  Too bad I totally can’t sing.  My love of show tunes never really ended though despite the fact that I haven’t seen a lot of shows so when Smash premiered this spring I was instantly hooked.  Thanks to the DVR I’ve seen all the episodes more then lets just say a few times.

I wanted to make a dress similar to the cherry dress but much like last week wanted something that would work for my uber cool day to day life so I ordered some pink cherry knit fabric and used one of my most favorite patterns.  This time I used the front of view B but the back of view D because I wanted the neckline to be similar to the inspiration but also wanted my back covered.  Construction was pretty easy but then it should be since I’ve used the pattern a few times.  With this version I put the top on before sewing it to the band to decide how I wanted the front to look.  That has got to be one of my favorite sewing tricks.

The Facts

Stephanie mother tried to teach her how to sew growing up but she didn't really get serious about it until her 4 year old daughter was born and she wanted to put her in fancy smocked dresses. Since then, she has learned to smock and sew. Her blog and screen name come from the initials of her two children Elijah who is 8 and Emily who is 4.

  1. You can’t beat a cherry patterned fabric for a classic. :-) Smash is one of those TV shows that hasn’t made it to NZ yet, but if it involves show tunes it sounds promising!

    • I was a little unsure of the cherries but I’m so glad I stuck with them now that its finished. Smash is a show about making a musical about Marylin Monroe so its not exactly deep but it is great escapism.

  2. lol! I don’t know what Smash is, but the cherry dress is totally cute!

    • Thanks so much. There are dream like sequences that have some pretty dresses. So far though most of the cast wear modern dance/workout gear.
