The “New Girl” Double Scallop Skirt

The "New Girl" Double Scallop Skirt

Hey girl, whatcha doing?
Hey girl, where you going?

Everyone’s favorite Indie It-Girl, Zooey Deschanel, sings these lyrics at the beginning of the theme song for her sitcom New Girl. I guess my reply to those questions would be “Chillin’.” and “Somewhere in a double scallop skirt.”

The Facts
Fabric | Some micro dot print, crappy, cotton-poly something or other and some sheer poly-cotton mix for the under layer.
Patterns | Vivat Veritas Scallop Waist skirt. I added the under layer and cut a facing from the self fabric to make the scalloped hem.
Year | Current.
Notions | Thread, a zip (from that massive granny collection I mentioned before) and interfacing for the waist.
Time to complete | About two hours. It wasn’t exactly hard, but I used this stinky fabric as a test run for the idea and realized it was working out too late to give up on it for better fabric. I added that under layer to give the skirt some body.
First worn | At home.
Wear again? | Yes, definitely. It will be a cute little, kicky summer thing.
Total price | Don’t know. Cheap. I think both fabrics might have been in the $1.95 a yard area over at Fabric.com The blouse I’m wearing is from Old Navy, it was on sale for something like $5 and that scarf cost me $2. The shoes were $15 from Target and they hurt like the cheapie things they are.

The "New Girl" Double Scallop Skirt

As much as I love Zooey and as funny as I think the show is, I was Bitter (with a BIG B) when I heard about it, because I had conceived an entire one hour dramedy cable series (think sex and cussin’) for her and was LIVID that someone beat me to the get-her-on-TV punch. Not that I have show biz connections. Or any experience writing sitcoms. Or writing anything professionally. Whatever. Those punks at Fox had stolen my chance in my crazy eyes.

There are tons of Zooey D style inspiration blogs, tumblrs, pinterest pages and flickr pics. While I don’t have quite that level of devotion I DO think the woman has a distinctive and appealing style. This post sums up the Zooey/Jess essentials pretty well. She’s circle skirt and bow loving, flat wearing kind of gal. I may never achieve my dream of writing Zooey an award-winning drama, but in the meantime, I can rock a version of her style.

This baby is far from perfect (I’d like to remove the machine hem and hand tack the scallop facing) and the pics are too melancholy to really channel this happy-go-lucky character and actress. But I’m giving myself a pass as I was having a tough week when I sewed the skirt up and then got sad family news the day before I took these pics. I was going to take them on my dress form, since the skirt was done, but putting it on and twirling a bit brought on a little cheer. Thanks for the motivation Sew Weekly community.
