Hot! The “Create Your Own Vacation” Resort Ensemble

Well, we just took a beach trip and it was lovely. Sometimes it’s hard to feel like you’re really on vacation with two little ones in tow, but this time it really did feel like a fun vacation, so that was excellent.
BUT… if I were to design my perfect vacation, this would be what I would wear.

Fabric: taupe jersey knit from and taupe zebra ITY knit also from
Patterns: McCalls 6559 and McCalls 6173
Year: current
Notions: FOE and reg. elastic
Time to complete: about 3 hours for both
First worn: for these pictures
Wear again? Yes. probably not together, unless my dream vacation comes true.

So let me lay it out for you. This is Sara Upshaw Resort Activewear 2012. The leggings are soft and comfortable, not too tight and a little long for an effect reminiscent to leg warmers from my dance background. The tunic/dress is jersey in the front and ITY in the back for fun (but also because I hate it when knits stick to my booty and get all wonky, so the ITY is nice and slippery so there’s no wonky sticking).
My morning would begin with some meditation in a large room with floor to ceiling windows looking out over the ocean. Continuing the relaxation, I would be treated to a hot stone massage, manicure and pedicure.
The day would continue with a ballet class (not too strict) with a live cellist and more floor to ceiling windows, this time looking out over lush gardens.

After a stroll through the garden, enjoying the cool breeze from the nearby ocean, I would participate in a stretching class and then have some lunch and a fruity drink.

Later that night there would be latin dancing in an outdoor pavilion complete with all sorts of awesome leads to dance with and a full latin orchestra.

I would wear bloomers with this, of course. I think the high-low hem effect is perfect for dancing!

After some exhilerating dancing to some exhilarating music, a group of us would head out to the beach to watch the sun set and listen to the waves.
And I’d probably want to do it all over again the next day… so I’d probably need to make something else to wear. :)

Sara is a dance teacher by degree and at heart, but has currently set that aside while her husband completes his radiology residency and she raise their two little girls. Her interest in sewing began when she had her first little girl four years ago and she began sewing for herself just last year. Sewing is her creative outlet and is also becoming an academic endeavor as she attempt to educate herself further in this new pursuit.

  1. I love the “business in the front, party in the back” effect of this tunic!

  2. Nice seeing your moves. Holidays with the kids get a little easier as they grow up a little. Cute outfit – I have just started yoga (taught my amazing dancer friend) – I like the long top option!

    • I think what made this holiday more enjoyable was my lowered expectations, honestly. I didn’t get disappointed because they really couldn’t “ruin” anything. I was just happy to be doing my daily thing in a different location. :)

  3. I know what you mean about vacation with 2 kids. I love your outfit though. The fabrics are great and using ity for the back is such a good idea.

  4. That sounds lovely. I think my dream vacation will happen when my kids are out of the home. My teenager never wants to do anything with us these days.

I love the outfit and think it’s cool that your top can also be used as a light summer dress.

  5. Gosh, the trip you describe sounds SO GOOD!! I love this little capsule wardrobe! It is definitely multipurpose and yet totally stylish!

Also, I am super jealous of your BR dancing skills! I LOVE Ballroom dancing. Yulia Zagoruychenko is my hero! I would love to take it up myself, but I have THREE left feet on the dance floor.

  6. Oh, you just described our canyon ranch vacation, they have amazing yoga classes during the day and Latin dance class at night. Love the options and the photos add a great ambiance to the description of the perfect vacation.

    • Seriously!? Sounds awesome! I’ll have to check into that for sure…. in, like, 10 years. haha! I had so many ideas in my head for where I wanted to take the photos, but it just wasn’t going to get done if I didn’t resort to the shutter release and my trusty living room. I’m glad they convey the feeling anyway.

  7. Great unfit and fun post. Good luck with that dream vacation, but until then, enjoy your fun times with your little ones

  8. Love everything about this outfit and post Sara. Your vacation ‘plans’ sound perfect, the thought you’ve put into the outfit, fit and materials….perfect, photos and poses… Perfect. LOVE IT :) even reading your post relaxed me I swear!
