I know I have been MIA for a couple weeks. I have been planning my daughter’s birthday and making her a new dress. Been quite busy. I of course couldn’t miss the Mad Men challenge. Those leading ladies have some “mad’ style. I really wanted to capture all three of the main women in Mad Men for this shoot and dress. The keys on the fabric of the dress is to represent each female character’s heart. They have all suffered through trials that either make them stronger or lead them to make life changing decisions. There is a way to unlock each heart if she will let you. I wanted to portray Peggy’s strength through loss, Joan’s ability to redeem her reputation, and Betty’s denial of fault or blame. The tight sheath of this dress is to represent Joan, The fabulous bow is totally Peggy’s style, and well, Betty is the one that needs her heart unlocked the most. I have only just started season 4 on Netflix, so I am not all the way caught up. But I am invested. I hope for Peggy to find love. I hope for Betty to resolve her issues. I hope for Joan to be successful in her talents.

I wish I had pictures from the fashion show this year, but forgot my camera in the car. For those of you who have not heard of Stop Staring! My friend, Alicia Estrada is the designer. Alicia and I met back in June 2011 at the Gwen Stefani Tea Party. She has a fabulous collection of retro and pinup style clothing dating from the 1930′s to the 1960′s. Her entire company is run by her and her sisters, Eva, Mona, Sarah, and Nyleen. I love her designs and I love the Estrada family.

  1. I adore Stop Staring! especially as they’re one of few retro styling companies who do plus size. Love your key pattern fabric and that adorable handbag/purse.

  2. NIce work Bethany. Love the idea of using that print. Good thinking!

  3. I love that you tried to incorporate pieces of each of the main ladies’ style! Great job!

    • Thank you. I had a hard time choosing just one, since I don’t fel like I relate to any of them. Kill 3 birds with one stone, you know?

  4. Cute! I really like the fabric and the added bow.

  5. I’m in love with your fabric! Those keys and your explanation of them was very interesting. I am attracted to symbolic fabric, but I hesitate to make an outfit because it’s so non-traditional. I think you’ve changed my mind. Why the h*** not? By the way, your whole outfit is just adorable from the color and cut all the way to the bow.

    • Thanks so much Barbara. I am so attracted to outlandish printed fabric. Nothing in my closet matches, and I hardly own anything that is a solid color. Call it a blessing and a curse! But it is so worth it to have something different no one else can find in stores.

  6. Hey Bethany, great to see you back. Absolutely want that fabrics, it’s awesome. The dress is so cool on you.

    • Found the fabric at Joann’s. I snatched up what they had left on the bolt. It was like an instant love connection without any hesitation or buyer’s remorse. Thank you so much!

  7. LOVE Stop Staring, I own one of their dresses and it’s one of my favorites. More importantly, love your “Key to Her Heart” dress–it’s awesome and Mad Men inspired without being a literal copy of a Mad Men dress (which I admit is my approach to this challenge).

    • I honestly couldn’t find a Mad Men dress that I felt I could pull off or wear again. So making it my own way in my own flavor was much more gratifying. SS Clothing is exceptional! You won’t be disappointed when the new collection comes out.

  8. What a fabulous print! I can clearly see the Mad Men inspiration in your outfit, but you don’t look like you’re wearing a costume. A great-looking dress for real, modern life.

  9. Love the dress, fabric, and Stop Staring too :)

  10. What a creative homage to all of the women of Mad Men. The detail is quite lovely. Well done.
