I nearly had to forfeit this week’s challenge. A back-to-back road trip to Ohio and business trip to Denver would keep me from my sewing room for nearly two weeks.

But, I just couldn’t accept defeat after a six-week streak of contributing. So, I asked myself, “WWKD?”

WHAT WOULD KAZZ DO? She’d click her bangles twice, tell the deejay to put Erykah Badhu on repeat, and commence putting chalk to fabric for a self-drafted miracle in minutes.

In the spirit of Kazz’s Inbetween Days Dress from week two, I drafted a criminally-simple, cropped, boatneck top for our tribute to the color red. A square, four seams, and holes for my head and arms. Too effing easy, man.

It only took about an hour to make the “Hip to Be Square” top. Sewing something wearable in that short amount of time felt naughty for some reason. Like I was getting away with murder. Well, maybe not murder, more like a violence-free mugging ;-).

Oh, and like Kazz does, I even named my garment using a title of a favorite song. Here’s the music video of Huey Lewis and the News singing it. Saw them in concert a few summers ago…they still rock after all these years.

Thanks for looking. And, forgive the Cliff’s Notes storytelling…
I’ve got a bag to re-pack and a plane to catch.

Najah Carroll is a project manager by day and seamstress by night. Once it became clear that ready-to-wear was never gonna support her five feet of curves, she taught herself to sew and make pattern alterations. In January, she lost her mind by signing up for this 52-week garment sewing challenge.
