The ‘Floaty Red’ Shirt

The Facts
Fabric: Rayon Challis (my favourite!) From the op shop.
Pattern: Simplicity 3842
Year: 2007
Notions: Thread
Time to complete: 3 hours(ish)
First worn: for photo
Wear again? Yes – to our niece’s first birthday if it is hot enough.
Total price: maybe A$3.00
Accompanying Music: Comedy Harmonists – Whistle while you work (which I am notorious for doing)

Let me say from the start that I LOVE THIS TOP! It just went together so easily and I was most chuffed that  it was a size smaller that I would have made, but it fits. I was able to use a piece of challis for something other than a half-circle skirt.

I have a few pieces of red in my stash. I like red and have had a number of red tops that I regularly wear to work, but this top is for outside of work. It does have a slight tendency to gape a little if you lean over, but I guess I simply have to wear a nice bra under it.

The insert across the v (which is a bit hard to see because of the business of the print but you can see better on the pattern pic) is made like a little bib on two ribbons. I put a couple of stitches to hold it in place which I think works well.

I call this top the Floaty top as it is light and comfortable and perfect for a warm day. I like the look of the squared v neckline and think that I will make this pattern again.

I haven’t said much about Valentine’s Day – it’s not such a big deal for us (despite my best efforts!! LOL) but I do like the Red theme.

Jen Brown just plain-old likes making stuff. If it's usable and wearable when complete, so much the better. A new technique or a chance to see how something worked is where the challenge lies.

  1. Jen, I love that top too! It fits so well, maybe that’s your true size? One thing I have learned this past year is that the details get lost in the fabric print, unless its a solid color. However, it’s still a very cute top and we’d for sure see the details if we were up close.

  2. That’s a really pretty top and a perfect fit… hope it was hot enough to wear at your niece’s birthday!

  3. Those colours look great on you!

  5. Great top, I’m a big fan of “it’s so Easy” patterns.

  6. Rayon challis is my favorite, too. Very cute top. Floaty ones are the best.
