the “meeting mena” dress
Name & Location: oonaballoona, but you can call me oona. and you can find me sewing in new york or los angeles.
How long have you been sewing: let me cast my mind back (to my burdastyle profile)… ah hah! since august 2007. what an excellent memory i have.
Why did you want to commit to The Sew Weekly Challenge: because i am off in the head.
i joined the community last spring, and my drunken takes on the weekly challenges provoked mena into giving me a separate gauntlet with oona does it!. i love tackling everyone’s personal throw downs– y’all have thought up some pretty insane stuff– but i’ve also missed the community feeling of working on the same challenge as all the lovely ladies here. so, i’m going to pare my ODI column down to bi weekly (more if i can handle it!), and get some SW challenges back under my machine feet. i’m raising the bar… and i’ve stocked the bar. that said, i’m all about no stress in the new year, so i love the new setup with more hands in the fray!
What do you love most about sewing garments: right now, two things that go together like gin and tonic: getting the adjustments on the tissue pattern perfect, then sewing the garment to the point where the first fitting proves them perfect.
What do you hate most about sewing garments: gotta be tracing off a pattern, then cutting the paper pattern out. hate it like the pox. hence, i make stuff up right from the fabric a lot.
What do you want to accomplish this year with regard to the challenge: each time i sew something that (to me) is a win, i’d like to remove one similar so-so, fail, outgrown or RTW garment from my closet. eventually i want an entire oona-made, everything’s a winner closet. the dress above fits the bill– i made it in two hours when i realized i had nothing me-made to wear to meet miss mena trott for the first time. that obviously would not fly, as she had just completed her seven in seven colette. the woman is crazy.
Your biggest non-sewing goal of 2012: to make my dreams come true (cue hall and oates). other than that easy task, learn what my camera can do.
What are your favorite sewing/fashion blogs: right here, baby. i have a ton of faves (129 on my blog page alone) so i’ll shout out to five ladies who churn out amazing garments on the regular that may be newish here at sew weekly (again, i’ve been swamped by ODI and holiday cocktails, so who knows, they may already be familiar faces). what up lladybird, cloth habit, daughter fish, mokosha, and a good wardrobe!
