Hot! The “Howdy, Y’all!” Dress

Name: Mary Danielson, Austin TX

Blog: Idle Fancy

How long have you been sewing: One-and-a-half years, almost to the day.

Why did you want to commit to The Sew Weekly Challenge: After three years of medical school, I finally have time to sew regularly. Hooray! All those projects bouncing around in my head can become real garments! I know myself, however. Without a goal to meet, I’ll spend entirely too many hours on Pinterest and not enough at my machine. Enter The Sew Weekly challenge. Since discovering this community, I’ve been awed by the amazing talent & creativity present through challenge after challenge. This year, I’m throwing my (handmade) hat into the ring!

What do you love most about sewing garments: Honestly, my favorite part of garment sewing is not depending on the mall anymore! Too many times, I’d set out in search of The Perfect Dress, only to come home disheartened and empty-handed. Now, I can create whatever delightful little piece my wardrobe needs next, be it a simple black skirt or a vintage-inspired cocktail dress. Even better? It’s always in my size.

What do you hate most about sewing garments: Cutting out the patterns & fabric. There is nothing worse than being all jazzed about your project, only to realize you have two hours of pressing, cutting, and marking ahead of you. If there were a business that I could send my fabric & patterns away to, only to have them returned all ready for me to sew, I’d be a very happy sewist, indeed.

What do you want to accomplish this year with regard to the challenge: Precisely that: I want to challenge myself. There are so many techniques I’m dying to try, like drafting Peter Pan collars, bound buttonholes, and classic pintucks. If I can use one new-to-me fabric or technique per project, this will be a very successful year of sewing.

Your biggest non-sewing goal of 2012: This year, I am invoking that age old goal: lose a few pounds. Thanks to endless studying binges and too many late night snacks, I’m about one size away from where I’m truly happy. I’m comfortable with my body, but I’d still really like to fit into my awesome Trashy Diva dresses again.

What are your favorite sewing/fashion blogs: My blog reader is brimming with wonderful sites, but some of my go-to favorites are: Lazy Stitching, Green Apples, and (of course!) The Sew Weekly.

After bemoaning the lack of affordable, pretty dresses in stores, Mary finally took her mother's advice and learned how to sew in the summer of 2010. She is now obsessed with vintage patterns, lovely fabrics, and the quest for - of course - the perfect dress.
