Hot! The “2011 Favorite” Dress

Me in my favorite dress of 2011.

Name & Location: Mena Trott, San Francisco

Blog: The Sew Weekly

How long have you been sewing: 2 years, religiously.

Why did you want to commit to The Sew Weekly Challenge: Oh, at this point I can’t help but commit to The Sew Weekly. It’s sort of become my life. And because there are so many people in the community that has made this community so special, I’m doing this for another year. Whether or not I make something each week, I don’t know yet. There’s just so many outfits you can have.

What do you love most about sewing garments: The ability to create something that I wouldn’t have even imagined only a couple hours earlier. I usually don’t know what I’m going to make until I start looking at my fabrics and pattern. And when I’m done, I’ve created something that doesn’t exist anywhere else! My favorite part of sewing itself — something I’ve documented at The Sew Weekly quite a bit — is the “Mena Test.” That’s the test I do when I check to see if I can get a dress to fit over my head without having to insert a zipper.

What do you hate most about sewing garments: See above. Zippers.

What do you want to accomplish this year with regard to the challenge: Well, I’ve done it for two years in a row so I know I can do all 52 weeks if I want to. I think that this year I’m determined to only make garments that I know will get a lot of wear. Last year I’ve made things I’ve liked, but just haven’t had the occasion to wear again. I want to make clothes I can wear daily and that will mean more separates. Yes, more boring separates.

Your biggest non-sewing goal of 2012: It’s kind of a sewing goal, but now. I want to build The Sew Weekly into a true business.

What are your favorite sewing/fashion blogs: There are way too many to list. I hope that the new Sew Weekly will become my best source for new discoveries.

  1. I so appreciate the fact you listened to whatever voice told you to do this. What a great source of inspiration you are.

  2. I agree with the above sentiment. I’ve so enjoyed this past year and re-discovering a creative side I’d all but buried. Look forward to more in 2012!

  3. I agree with Michelle – you are uber fabulous!

  4. Mena,
I have been a long time lurker, but only just started to comment. You are an inspiration. I have just started to sew for myself again. I was only sewing for big events before, and I realized I love to sew. I love checking on this weeks theme and imagining what I would do. Well this year I will stop dreaming and start sewing! I am wearing a dress that I made over Winter break, and I am thrilled to say it passed the Mena Test, I was not wanting to do the zip, and it hit me! I wonder if I could Mena this? And it worked: ) thank you for such a wonderful site! I have come to love it and several of the ladies very much!
