The “Black or Maybe It’s Blue” Dress
Name and Location: My name is Erin and I live in Grover Beach, California (three hours north of Los Angeles and three hours south of San Francisco).
Blog: Miss Crayola Creepy
How long have you been sewing: I’m new to it! My wonderful husband got me a sewing machine for Christmas 2009. I did not know how to sew whatsoever, but with some practice and patience I have slowly been able to make a few things. Within the last six months I have started taking sewing more seriously.
The dress in the photo is the first dress I have made and I just love it! My friend asked me to be a bridesmaid in her wedding and because the bridesmaids got to pick their own black dresses I decided to make my own. After coming home from the fabric store my husband pointed out that the fabric wasn’t black, it was a dark blue. Oops. An argument over color ensued, but long story short I ended up with a BLUE dress that I didn’t wear in the wedding, but I adore nonetheless.
Why did you want to commit to The Sew Weekly Challenge: I am an organized person and I like to plan. Deadlines are great. Hopefully, having a clear goal in sight will help me be more productive.
What do you love most about sewing garments: I love the fact that everything I make is custom! There’s no way I will walk down the street and see someone wearing my outfit.
What do you hate most about sewing garments: My least favorite thing about sewing is when I am talking on the phone and/or drinking too much wine and I cut out my fabric incorrectly. I hate that!
What do you want to accomplish this year with regard to the challenge: I won’t be able to make a new garment every week, but I am hoping that the challenges I do participate in will produce some nice quality pieces of clothing that I will be proud to wear. My longterm goal is to replace most of my store bought clothes with handmade ones.
Your biggest non-sewing goal of 2012: Start a book club and read at least a book a month, make at least three quilts (I love quilting!), and learn to embroider. My lifetime goal is to keep learning.
What are your favorite sewing/fashion blogs: The Coletterie, lladybird, My Happy Sewing Place, Rhinestones and Telephones, Threadsquare, Veronica Darling, and Sewly a Harpist.

Pssha – I think you sound just as exciting now as when you were a flapper, because learning is EXCITING!! I love learning, and I’m really looking forward to your creations this year!
Thanks, Meg! I love to learn too! I graduated from college a few years ago and I miss the learning side of it. Don’t think I’m crazy, but I kind of want to go back and take some classes…
