The “2011 Dior New Look” Dress
Name & Location: Ewa Jonsson, Gothenburg, Sweden
How long have you been sewing: For as long as I can remember. I hand sewed tiny dresses for my soft toys when I had just started school…
Why did you want to commit to The Sew Weekly Challenge: After starting my blog and joining the Sew Weekly Community in 2011, sewing got so much easier, or rather, getting to the actual sewing… I am the person who has a million ideas and plans, and get stuck before I even start, because I don’t know what fun project to do first. Following most of the challenges has helped me with direction and sort of brought me back to earth on a lot of occasions, with the themes and time limits. I love the feeling of making something to share with you others out there, and the whole styling-taking photos-editing photos is super fun as well! And just having the chance to be featured on the Sew Weekly blog front page is awesome!
What do you love most about sewing garments: That I can make clothes that fit me, my body. That I can make something that no one else has. That I can be super fashion forward if I like, copying runway fashion way before it hits the stores, or go very vintage and make something that looks cut out from a fashion history book. That I can whip something up super fast the same day I go to a party, or spend weeks on making something extraordinary. And I lovelovelove the feeling of, when someone compliments what I’m wearing, being able to say “I made it myself”!
What do you hate most about sewing garments: The fact that I’m almost always about two inches short of fabric, and have to spend loads of time tweaking patterns and/or rearranging pattern layout plans. I know I wouldn’t have this problem if I only bought my fabrics in a fabrics store… But I love finding vintage scraps and leftovers, and have to make do with smaller pieces. And new fabrics are extremely expensive where I live.
What do you want to accomplish this year with regard to the challenge: I want to get better at finishing in time. Better at making garments that are beautiful both inside and out. I want to add more useful everyday clothes to my wardrobe, things I can combine with all the vintage garments I already own.
Your biggest non-sewing goal of 2012: I want to stop being afraid and start following my dreams!
What are your favorite sewing/fashion blogs: Oh, this is a hard one… I have lists of over 200 blogs that I follow and try to read at least once or twice a week. A few of them I visit almost daily… Sew Weekly of course, Sew Retro, The Sartorialist, Advanced Style, Fashionable Shenanigans, Highsnobette, The Cut, Garance Doré. These are all updated a lot, so almost everyday there’s loads of new inspiration!
All in all, so happy to be posting here, and I’m looking forward to a super inspiring and fun sewing 2012!
