Ready for a Challenge in 2012

Little Bo Peep and her lost sheep from Halloween 2011

Name & Location: Christine Newton, San Jose, California

Blog: What’s Up, Cupcake?

How long have you been sewing: I started sewing clothing in September of 2010. Before that I had very minimal sewing experience… I couldn’t even thread my machine on my own!

Why did you want to commit to The Sew Weekly Challenge: I participated a bit in 2011 and really liked have weekly goals and themes that made me challenge myself in my sewing.  By participating in 2012, I want to continue challenging my sewing skills, and be more thoughtful in my sewing; using existing stash fabrics, and patterns, or thrifting/buying vintage when possible.

What do you love most about sewing garments: So many things! Just to name a few: Having clothes with the perfect fit, the ability to have something unique in your closet, and to have clothes that represent your style.

What do you hate most about sewing garments: I can be short on patience and sewing can definitely test that. Mainly when it comes to finishing seams, etc. I’ve learnt the hard way that it’s a necessary evil, but I still grumble about it while I’m doing it.

What do you want to accomplish this year with regard to the challenge:  Planning out my sewing so that everything I make I would actually wear. It doesn’t need to be an everyday outfit, but I want my clothing to reflect my style and taste.  I would love to do every challenge, but to be realistic, I’m going to set a goal of a minimum of 2 a month… but I’m hoping to make them all!

Your biggest non-sewing goal of 2012: Workin’ on my fitness! I found my stride towards the second half of 2011, with a slight stall due to surgery at the end of the year. I want to keep it up and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

What are your favorite sewing/fashion blogs: When I’m not surfing the Sew Weekly forums, I’m probably checking out Debi’s page, Tilly and the Buttons, Sew Retro, Casey’s Elegant Musings… the list goes on and on!  More are listed on my links page of my blog and the list is constantly growing.

Christine started sewing in late 2010, inspired by the many crafty bloggers and their gorgeous, self-made outfits. When she's not sewing, she's doing Irish and Scottish dancing, needlework or other various crafts, and hanging out with her hubby and fur babies (1 dog and 3 cats).
