Hot! Penelope Sews a Dress

So Pen has finally reached an age where her short-attention span is actually quite long enough for her to sit down and sew at my machine. Not only that, but she has good enough eye-hand coordination to actually work the machine — without totally scaring me.

Yesterday, I picked up some fleece (so there would be no hemming to do) so Penelope could make a simple dress. Other than cutting the fleece, she pretty much did every step on her own. She pinned the pattern, figured out what seams she needed to stitch and worked the pedals and feed on the machine. The dress is, as you can imagine, a bit of a mess but she LOVES it.

Here’s a brief video of her doing a little sewing.

And she is, pinning:

And here’s my little Punky Brewster modeling her creation! Bonus points if you can spot my dog!

Mena Trott

Mena Trott started The Sew Weekly to document her attempt to sew all of her own clothes in 2010. Since then, she's made over 125 outfits and has way more clothes than she needs.

  39. oooooohhhhhh that’s the cutest thing ever! heart-melting. my daughter is just 6 months younger than pen…now i know what i have to look forward to. :)

  40. How stinking cute!!! My momma taught me how to sew when I was 7. Some of my favorite memories are of us sitting in the sewing room together sewing. I’m 28 now and still love to sew… Pen will have a great skill for the rest of her life!

  41. She has a future to be a great designer in the future. She is so cute!

  42. Sooooo cute! I love it how she tries it on immediately. How old is she again? My son is 3,5 years and he’s showing some interest in my sewing, too. I am sure it won’t take long and I’ll let him try out the sewing machine…

  43. She is fantastic! Also, my heart has exploded from all the mom-daughter hobby sharing. Gah!

  44. Absolutely wonderful! She’s such a doll! Thanks for sharing.

  45. Hi Penelope,
I love your dress. You did a fantastic job cutting it out and then sewing it.
It is so pretty and looks fantastic on you..
I cant wait to see the next dress you make.. Happy sewing.

  48. Wow, how cool!! You tell her I said if the mistakes don’t show in the pictures they don’t count!! So great that she has the influence of someone like you to help her learn.

  49. YAY PEN! She is just too much – love the dress she made!

  50. How darling she’s taking an interest in sewing! :D I can still remember the first time my mom showed me how to sew (I wasn’t too much older than Pen–although my mother didn’t trust me with her sewing machine until I was older. ;) I was a bit of a inadvertently-destructive child. lol.)–it was magical! :) I think it’s fantastic she made a dress–who knows where this will lead? ;)

  51. Omigod, how adorable is she? So serious while she worked! That is just precious!

  52. I see a promising future for her :-) adorable

  53. OK, so you KNEW this would be one of those “So cute!” posts and it’s a winner! Absolutely fun to watch and make sure to read all of the great comments to her! A fleece dress… I feel a trend!

  54. I either need to make a baby girl and find a time machine so I can fast forward to this Look-At-My-Little-Girl-Sewing moment or just find one Penelope’s age and steal (er, adopt) her. Pure cuteness.

  55. Pen and Mena,

Great job. Can hardly wait to see you wearing the dress. love Grandma

  56. OMG! SO MUCH SQUEEE! Love it so much that its made me decide my daughter is going to help sew her coat.

  57. Super cute! My little one would like to start sewing, I’m wondering what pattern you used?

  58. Oh my gah, she’s absolutely adorable! Love that face and her little dress!

  59. I was hesitant about letting my son use my machines, because he is a bit of a space cadet, but maybe I’m being too protective (of my machine!) I guess I learned at 6 years old, so why not let him? The only downside is that my 2 year old daughter will want to follow suit……..I’ll get my first aid kit ready.

  60. Oh my gosh! That is so cute! I cannot wait for my kids to get old enough to trust them with pins :)

  61. I’m new here – how old is Pen? I’m trying to figure out when I can get my 4-year-old started. She’s very keen to use the machine, but since I work on a 1970’s industrial Pfaff, I’m a little nervous about getting her started! I like the dress!

  62. Just wonderful – such a clever little lady!
