Claire McCardell. I think she once designed patterns for one of the big three, I wish they’d be reissued.
Ah, thank you for calling out Clarie McCardell, she truly is an American designer of a lovely era!
I have lots of favorites! Adrian, the film designer had an enormous influence on American fashion (and wound up leaving the film world behind–mostly–to focus on couture). Part of the fun of the movie, The Women, is the gorgeous costuming and not-to-be-missed fashion show sequence in stunning technicolor (black and white film). Valentina (originally Russian, but immigrated to the U.S. and also worked in the film world) and the wonderful Claire McCardell. Adrian and McCardell, in particular, argued for an American brand of fashion.
