MTL: Bloom Dress
And now, for our first Make This Look… By Request. Charlotte writes:
I am thinking of making a dress for my friend’s late September wedding, plus my own 40th birthday is in September(!). I have been looking where I would normally go for a special occasion dress, Monsoon. I think this is a UK chain. Anyway here are 3 dresses I like from Monsoon (which I think is considered quite expensive). I just checked, £95 (what 2 of the three cost) is $153. I would only get something from here as a very special treat.
If you select one for MTL magic I would be really pleased (can’t guarantee I will make it though!). My favourite is the first one….
I have to say that I actually like the Alexander Henry fabric I found better than the original! But since I could only find it at two sellers (Etsy and SewMamaSew) and there isn't much available, I offer an alternative in a different color scheme.
Thanks, Charlotte!
Resources
- Fabric: Harajuku Peony in Muted by Alexander Henry (from Etsy for $7.75/yd, from SewMamaSew for $7.65/yd)
- Alternative Fabric: Indochine Harajuku Peony White/Multi
($8.48/yd at Fabric.com) - Pattern: Simplicity 2473
Tips
- Omit the sash for a look truer to original. Band can be in print fabric or a contrasting navy blue. Personally, I'd love to see this dress in the alternative fabric print with a contrasting red sash!
Want The Sew Weekly to figure out how to make a particular look? Drop us a line with a link to the original garment as well as a little explanation of why you'd like to make the dress (it can be very short).

Thank you so much Mena, this is fantastic. I am thrilled to be your first request MTL! (not so thrilled to be 40, this will help take the sting out of it)

I can’t believe how right on this is. Great work, Mena. Charlotte, I hope you make this, save some money and have it fit perfectly! Welcome to your 40s! I’m loving this decade so far.
The AH fabric is heads over the other. I just made a princess Aline with a deep scoop neck in orange/rose/purple flowers by AH. I love it!

Charlotte, I totally missed this post but our dear friend Judy pointed it out to me. I love your dress idea, I think this would look beautiful on you. Here’s a little secret about 40, it’s fabulous as in fabulous 40! It’s a great age, I promise!
