Make This Look: Salty & Pepper Dress
If you're like me and a bit of a sewing addict, you probably can't see off-the-rack clothing without thinking "how can I make that?" I figured I might as well bring that obsession to The Sew Weekly with a new feature: Make this Look. Today's look is the out-of-stock Salty & Pepper dress from Modcloth.com.
Original Inspiration
Resources
- Woven 1/4 Gingham Black
($3.98/yard) from Fabric.com; - Premium Broadcloth Solid Black
($3.98/yard) from Fabric.com; - Halter Dress Pattern from BurdaStyle ($5.40)
Tips
- Skip the black midriff piece and instead make or purchase a wide black belt.
- If you add the ruffles to the bottom, do so before pleating the skirt.
- Add a faux placket to the center bodice piece before attaching the skirt and collar. Then attach the buttons as a last step.

I love this! I play this game all the time when I go shopping.
This is a great idea for a regular feature! Thanks so much!!!
Love! I’ve started thinking like that when I go shopping. I try not to buy anything unless I can’t make it (like a nice tailored jacket or something) or if it is the most amazing special print that I just love too much and know that I’ll never find anything like it. A black gingham dress, however, is totally do able.
Fantastic feature, love it!
Haha funny you should post this. I was looking to recreate this look, and I found a pattern and bought some gingham already!
I agree with Melissa – this would be a great regular feature! It’s useful even for those of us who’d probably never wear this particular style, since it improves our eye.
Oh yes, I play this game too whenever looking at magazines or catalogs. And I spend waaaaay too much time daydreaming at the ModCloth web site. That BurdaStyle pattern will be perfect for recreating this dress. Can’t wait to see your results!
Wow, I really might to this, I like this so much!!! Thank you, Mena!
I actually play this when I watch movies. I get lots of ideas sometimes a whole outfit or just a part of an outfit or just an embelishment. Thank you for the great ideas!
I hope you do make this a regular feature! I do have to confess to doing this as well, though Anthropolgie is most often my drug of choice.
I love this new feature! I’m always guilty of going window shopping just to get ideas for clothing that I can rip-off and make myself.
This dress is a wonderful one. I love the look of the ModCloth example and it is much more inspirational (I think) than the one made for the Burda photos, which lacked a nice waist definition.
I’m looking forward to more of these posts!
