Gearing Up for Gatsby

This afternoon while cleaning (or attempting to clean) my sewing room, I saw some vintage rayon in my stash and thought that it would be quite nice for my Gatsby Summer Afternoon dress for this year. Thinking that it was way too early to think about Gatsby, a look at my archives revealed that I began my sewing plans on June 11th! I can't believe it's been a year already!

Considering how much The Sew Weekly community has grown over the past year, I couldn't imagine a better event to hold a meet-up. We'll have the next couple months to sew our period-authentic (this isn't a spectator event – everyone that goes needs to look the part) outfits and then we can casually picnic together at the event. After last year's picnic I said that the theme of 2011's picnic would be "no theme and hardly any work." I'm sticking to that. There will be no tables or chairs at the Trott camp, nor will there be shrimp cocktail on ice. This year is all about casual picnicking, drinking, desserts (you'll bring your own picnic, of course).

That all said, who's in?

  1. Oh, I want so badly to go to this! Pity I live on the other side of the world…

  2. I’m with Peta – I SOOOOO would love to go to the Gatsby Picnic, if only I wasn’t 16 hours away!! Maybe I should try and organise our own Gatsby Picnic??

  3. Me too! Feel free to bring the gatsby picnic to Australia :)

  4. I would absolutely love to go to but I’m in the NYC area…awfully far!

  5. Maybe we should all have Gatsby meet-ups of our own…One in central park would be divine!

  6. The Gatsby picnic does look like a lot of fun…Knowing me now, I’m more likely to knit something for the event than sew. I’m just a lazy sewer these days. Besides, knitting is portable. Now I’d knit the top, lose weight so I fit into a high-wsisted straight skirt, maybe put on vintage shoes (I say maybe ‘cuz I’m heaing from ankle surgery)…but go totally boffo with the vintage accessories and hair.

  7. ah if only I lived in your area… or anywhere that did fun things like that.

  8. Shame I’m on the other side of the country- when will the sew weekly East coasters do something? ;)

  9. i would be so in were i closer… east coasters, (lisette? kim? rachel?) we can’t make mena’s mothership picnic, but i am down for central park!!! i think it’s a great idea to organize gatsby picnics wherever we can get a satellite group together.

  10. Gatsby time! Just had a major flashback – started reading your blog a year ago, roughly. Thank you for being such an inspiration – as a sewist, blogger & community builder!

  11. I’m for an East Coast sister Gatsby session with all of you lovelies. (Shall we call it the Daisy?) Central Park is always good for a meet-up in my book. :)

  12. Lisette, that’s a brilliant idea!! I can’t make Mena’s Gatsby Picnic either (way on the east coast of Canada) but it would be great to have a Gatsby-themed sew-along and picnic in our local parks!

  13. NYC ladies/gents -
There is already a Jazz Age Lawn Party that happens twice a summer – it will be on Saturday and Sunday, June 25/26th and August 20th/21st. It is great fun!

  14. My husband and I will have just moved to Berkeley so I am totally in!!!! It will be a great way to ease into our totally new world. Now what to make to wear???

  15. I live in Alameda….I am definitely a little nervous trying to find a pattern (my bust is 38 and trying to find a vintage pattern is difficult), BUT! I got my husband to say yes…and I wont lie, I think it would be cute to dress my 3 year old in a handmade dress. She LOVES any of my handmade dresses for her, but she is scared to wear them!! She says she doesn’t want them to get dirty!

  16. My friends and I have planning to go to 2011 Gatsby for the past year. As of right now, we are still on track though I probably will not start thinking about an outfit until August. Hope that will be enough time.

  17. I’ve been thinking this over for the past few days. I was worried it was too ambitious. But, I just went to see “Midnight in Paris,” and I realized that I really would love the challenge. So, I’m in. I’ll be bringing my husband as well. How do we best share our ideas, inspiration, and plans?
