Yes, It’s Still a Pillowcase

image from farm3.static.flickr.com Over at xoJane, I take on the challenge to make the memorable Sassy pillowcase dress from December 1992.

Spoiler: It turned out quite well!

  1. It looks really good :)

  2. oh yes I like it! I thought that using pillow cases would be a really good weekly challenge. For those smaller ladies, you could make whole tops/ skirts ect, or for us that are a little larger culd use the fabic in some other way, bias binding, bits to build up or pockets, the list is endless!

  3. What a great revamp of a pillowcase and the original 90s project! ;) I really love it–and how you styled the finished dress. Bravo!

  4. Wow! I second the idea of a pillow case challenge!

  5. That looks WAY awesome. I made a pretty sweet skirt ages ago out of a pillowcase. I’ll have to find photos.

  6. Your dress looks fantastic – but you must have VERY large pillows over there – I’ve never seen one that big! Loved your article.

  7. I don’t think they make a pillow case big enough for me, but I’ll be on the lookout.

  8. That’s so cute! All the pillowcases I have so obviously look like bed linens.

  9. I hear you!… I’ve already discovered I do not fit into our pillowcases! Never mind length… there’s not a chance of one getting around my hips! (other than the squarer European size… I’ve never even seen any other sizes in the shops. ) But agree.. dress looks fantastic! who knew!?

At the weekend I found a double pack of pillowcases in a discount shop for £3.99 in a black and purple swirly pattern – no way would I have bought them for the original purpose. It’s only through this site that I thought I could wear them!

How cute.. Before I started sew weekly and sewing for me..I made pillowcase dresses [for kids] and sold them on ebay.. I know over the last 3-4 yrs, I have made 1000.. I said ,I never wanted to see another one.hahaha
Mena… you can wear a pillowcase and look so cute…

  12. Awesome print, and it looks so stylish on you! I was of the Sassy generation, though I only caught onto it’s awesomeness a couple years before it discontinued. However, unlike you with your mom, I had my best friend’s mom regaling me with stories on how she’d make tablecloth dresses all the time in the 60s and 70s. Go figure.
