First, Mary Quant and Twiggy. Mondrian-inspired modern art colorblocking, microminis and patent-leather boots.
Yes first thing that comes to my mind is the Beatles attire, and maxi coats with fur at the collar and cuffs and mini skirts with high boots. But these days I also think of Diana and Kate.

I worked on ships for 10 years and met lots of Brits. I hate to say this, but the one thing that always stood out was clunky shoes.

I think of sweaters paired with knee-length skirts and sensible shoes, sort of a schoolgirl look (think Joan Fontaine in “Rebecca”).
Definitely the mods, but then also things like peacoats and rain boots! Cozy sweaters…
