Twenty Questions with Sarai Mitnick

For The Sew Weekly's inaugural Twenty Questions With…, I had a chance to ask Sarai Mitnick, proprietress of Colette Patterns, well, twenty questions about herself, sewing and style. Sarai rocks in all sorts of ways, but as the owner and designer of Colette Patterns, she has become a darling of the independent pattern making world.

  1. Name: Sarai (pronounced Sair-ee)
  2. Location: Portland, OR
  3. Pattern tracer or cutter? Cutter mostly (but I'm usually cutting my own printed patterns)
  4. Most exhilarating sewing step: Choosing fabric and notions
  5. Most dreaded sewing step: Laborious hand sewing.
  6. Favorite pattern at the moment: a little blouse pattern I'm still working on for Spring
  7. Favorite decade to sew: 1930s
  8. Pattern weights or pins? Weights
  9. Favorite style icon of all time: Nora Charles!
  10. Fabric before pattern or pattern before fabric? Pattern before fabric, usually
  11. Sewing room: messy or clean? Fairly clean
  12. Biggest sewing splurge: SILK!
  13. Biggest sewing success: My wedding dress
  14. Biggest sewing failure: Too many to count. Most recently, the rayon gab shorts I made last summer that wrinkle horribly.
  15. Hats? Yay or Nay. YAY.
  16. Favorite season to sew for: Fall
  17. Seam Finishing: Pinked, French, stitched or serged? I let the fabric decide.
  18. Favorite skirt: A-Line, Pleated or Circle? A-line or pencil.
  19. Style kindred spirit: Ginger or Mary-Ann? Ginger. With a dash of Mary-Ann and a touch of Mrs. Howell.
  20. And, especially for Sarai - Favorite Colette Pattern: Negroni, my men's shirt pattern! I just love it.

  1. This is a great feature! I love learning more about the personality behind the scenes.

  2. Love this feature! what a beautiful wedding dress! And I absolutely ADORE that she said the 30’s as her favorite decade to sew! Looking forward to the blouse pattern :-)

  3. Hi Sarai! I just discovered your patterns not too long ago and I am in LOVE. I purchased the Sencha pattern at Whipstitch in Atlanta and can’t wait to see how it turns out. My next purchase will be the Negroni pattern, my boyfriend could use a few new shirts. Keep up the great work!

  4. Fun feature, The Sew Weekly is on a roll! I can’t wait for future CP designs. Sarai and her team do such an amazing job and it’s neat to find out her favorite decade is the ’30s!

  5. I love the 20 questions format. This is a really neat feature!
