Elizabeth Taylor, 1932-2011

During our Unrequited Love in Film challenge, the inspiration for my "Yellow Rose of Texas" Dress was Elizabeth Taylor's character in Giant. While I was never a huge Elizabeth Taylor fan (I'm more a Debbie Reynolds sort of person), she was one of those celebrities that sort of seemed like they were immortal. Especially for me, as a child of the 1980s. I remember her being the living icon of "Old Hollywood."

Like so many other child stars, she regretted losing her childhood to Hollywood (that was her bond with Michael Jackson). Lest we think that turning very young teenagers into sex icons is a new trend, the little girl was made into "Liz Taylor," way sooner than she should have been.

Here she is, on the cover of Life Magazine from 1947. She's 15.

But the most striking image is this iconic photograph of Taylor in what I believe has to be one of the most beautiful Hollywood dresses. At the time this photo was taken, she was not yet 17. Yes, this is a sixteen year-old:

Et-lifeSo, rest in peace, Elizabeth Taylor. May there be horses, diamonds and men wherever you are now.

  1. What a beauty! I hope her last days were spent with friends and family!

  2. That last photo is one of my favorites of her, and lets not talk about the dress as it is one of my favorites too. What an incredible iconic beauty!

  3. Elizabeth Taylor was certainly one of Hollywood’s legends, and one of its tragedies. So much beauty … and so much sadness. I hope the end of her life was filled with love.

  4. Holy moly such sass for a 16 year old, it took me til my late 20s to get such sass and then it was fleeting and disappeared along with my waistline ;o)
She was so beautiful and that dress is stunning too!

  5. First Jane Russell, and now Elizabeth Taylor gone too – 2011 is a sad year :(

  6. Thanks for this, I would agree. An icon that seemed to go on and on but with such a story behind her.
She really was stunning and defined an era!
