Following Fashion Week Fall ’11

Never before in my entire life have followed what's going on at Fashion Week. I guess that's not completely true since I would check out the Project Runway show before the finale would air. This year, however, things are different. I'm actually interested in what's being put out there as inspiration for my own sewing. Even though I do not consider myself a designer in any way, as I start to mix and match styles a bit more and not go completely from a pattern, the runways at Fashion Week are a great study aid.

My tastes are pretty subdued, however. My favorite show so far has been Luca Luca. Apparently, the collection is inspired by a pretty specific narrative about a woman in the woods. I may not see that story, but I definitely see a strong 1940s influence. With the exception of the fur (seriously, why is fur acceptable again?) pieces, I'd wear almost everything in that collection.

  1. Love that rose dress with the black color! And why IS fur acceptable again? Not only did both my mother-in-law’s get fur coats this year, but I sat behind a man wearing a floor-length fur coat on an airplane. (I dared my husband to stroke it.)

  2. I have to admit that most of the collections have been a bit of a yawn thus far. But I think that’s because things are swinging in the minimalism direction, and I’m not a big fan of that look or the preponderance of neutrals. But the Luca Luca show was one that caught my eye; pops of spicy colors and classic silhouettes with a twist. I’m drooling over several pieces…

  3. Okay… I take it back about things skewing towards minimalism this year… I just went and checked some of the new collections that have gone up, and have found quite a few that exude the more colorful, lush and cozy look I like for fall/winter. ;) lol.

  4. I know that it has been gaining popularity again for years — I’m just so surprised that it’s featured so predominately. I have to admit that even though I hate what it stands for and do not wear any, it is fetching in some of these collections.

  5. For, me it’s also because it’s Fall collections. I looked back at all of the Spring collections a couple weeks ago and I was just loving the prints and color. But yes, it’s pretty dull.

  6. Oh, good! I was just about to check on this weekend’s shows. Was there any in particular that you loved?

  7. I’ll answer my own question — I really like the Lela Rose collection, especially this look:
