The Sew Weekly Contributor: Veronica Darling
Blog: Veronica Darling
How long have you been sewing: 8 years, and I'm entirely self taught. I've gained most of skills from following vintage patterns or turning to Google.
Why did you want to commit to The Sew Weekly Challenge: I always love different challenges, having done a few 'Sewing every day for a month' type personal goals, but The Sew Weekly Challenge appears to attune to a slower, steady rate of sewing, and finishing, garments. I have adored following Mena's year of sewing, so fingers crossed I can do just as well!
What do you love most about sewing garments: Sewing for me is an escapism type hobby, where I dream up ideas and reflect on memories, so I often get caught up in the whole experience. But as for the finer details of sewing a garment, I love choosing fabrics to suit a pattern (although it's sometimes hard!) and I really like sewing zippers and collars. Oh, and I love the overlocked edges as well!
What do you hate most about sewing garments: Mostly I don't like doing buttons, and handsewing in general. Ick! I also don't like doing hems, but it often just depends on what kind of skirt I'm making, and what mood I'm in!
What do you want to accomplish this year with regard to the challenge: With The Sew Weekly Challenge, I'd like to explore that slower steady rate of sewing (an hour here, half an hour there etc through the week) but I'd also like to extend some of my sewing skills. There's plenty of fabrics and patterns I have avoided previously because of the buttons, or the sheer fabrics, so I'd like to be more diverse with my sewing techniques and fabrics. I often don't tailor to fit as I go along (it's my 'follow' the instructions drive), so I'd like to improve my drafting skills too. So I guess, I'm keen to take more risks this year!
Your biggest non-sewing goal of 2011: My Husband and I are talking about buying a house in Melbourne, so this time next year I'd love to be blogging and sewing from my own home. But as always, I'd love to make sure my day job is just as fun and challenging as it has been over the past 6 months!
What are your favorite sewing/fashion blogs: There's way too many to mention! But just checking my recent windows: some sewing ones I've been reading for a while: <a href="http://oonaballoona.blogspot.com/">, <a href="http://nikkishell.typepad.com/nikkishell/">Nikki-Shell</a>, <a href="http://sozowhatdoyouknow.blogspot.com/">So, Zo</a> and <a href="http://boodogg.blogspot.com/">Boo Dogg and Me</a> and I love the fashion blogs: <a href="http://the-paperdoll.blogspot.com/">Pretty Little Pictures</a> & <a href="http://esmeandthelaneway.blogspot.com/">Esme and the lane way.</a>
