The Sew Weekly Asks: 1/3/10

Do you have a sewing new year's resolution for 2011?

Mena Trott

Mena Trott started The Sew Weekly to document her attempt to sew all of her own clothes in 2010. Since then, she's made over 125 outfits and has way more clothes than she needs.

  1. My biggest resolution is tied into the purpose of The Sew Weekly for 2011 — to get more women sewing their own clothes and being part of the community. I’ve had such a wonderful 2010 sewing that I just want to help others achieve a similar joy.
On a smaller scale, I want to take my time more and not rush through garments. And, keep my sewing room clean!

  2. I have followed sewing blogs for the last 6-8 months but have finished nothing for myself. My goal this year is to finish several items and then wear them in public. I also hope to pick up some skills to help me feel more confident sewing such as zippers, linings, seam finishes. I love this blog!

  3. I don’t really make new years resolutions for anything, so I guess my resolution would be to keep up the good sewing work I’ve been doing. I do want to comment more on other people’s blogs in 2011 too.

  4. My resolution is to work on my Building a Lifetime Wardrobe Project and to take more time and care in my sewing.

  5. I don’t sew enough to designate a permanent spot for my machine, but my resolution is to find a space (with good light!) where I can set up my sewing machine and leave it set up until I’m finished working on the project. In other words, NOT the dining room table…

  6. I have a list of 10 things I want to sew this year. I plan to sew more but I will begin with the 10. I have also been sewing small things like pj’s and bears for the Grands. I have been doing this just to get myself back in to the comfortable stage of sewing and to test my sewing machine. It was down for a short while and I just want to make sure it is sewing properly before I sew something.

  7. I would like to use my sewing skills to decrease the size of my wardrobe, but increase its interestingness by making or altering more pieces for myself. Less shopping, more making. Swap size for interestingness.
I’d also like to build an arsenal of costumes and fancy dresses (not for anything in particular), but that may be too lofty a goal. :) We’ll see.

  8. Love the new look blog, and looking forward to what is coming. My resolution for this year would be to sew more for my family, clothes and other homey stuff we need, and stop mindless consumerism.

  9. YES! To complete projects that I haven’t had the time or focus to start until now (yay dresses!), write pattern reviews for, and blog about my projects.

  10. I have “sew” many resolutions! (har-har) Mainly, I want to sew every pattern in my growing repertoire and use as much fabric in my stash as possible. At the same time, I want to sew more for myself. I can’t wait to sew along with your blog and check out the growing community. Thanks for the inspiration!

  11. More a dream than a resolution: I want to wear something each week that I’ve made.
Some weeks that might just be a headband, and I’m okay with that. This week’s was an A-line skirt.

  12. Yes – for me it’s about applying myself to slower sewing so that I think about design & detail such as learning & practising new techniques – drafting, lining, piping, using different machine feet. All of this so that I hopefully make clothes that fit me well that I will love forever & that will become part of a coherent wardrobe.

  13. I want to work my sewing and cooking blogs more, my goals are listed there, but the main one would have to be get organized and my sewing shed complete. I signed up for a sewing buddy at Whipstitch and the Style Stitches Bag Challege at Jemjam to make bags. My hope is to use the bags i make for christmas, while learning techniques and a sewing buddy to keep me moving. I also hope to make more dresses for myself, to go with I am older lets change things up a bit look. I want to make clothes I can love.

  14. Sew more and learn new things! I’m a beginner so there’s a lot of work to do…

  15. My 2 major sewing resolutions for 2011:
    1. Go through my vintage German pattern magazines from the 30ies to 50ies for inspiration, scan them all for conservation and share the pictures with my blog readers.
    2. Taking up your idea of a dress per week I introduced the “Me-Made Monday”: I want to make one vintage outfit per week which is wearable today (and present it on my blog).
